This Victorian ambrotype from the 1880s features a handsome boy in his best suit. It is in a wonderful gutta percha presentation case with velvet interior and a gilt frame. Gutta percha was a very early form of plastic derived from the namesake tree. It is in great condition with a secure clasp. Ambrotypes are less common than daguerreotypes or tintypes. These photos are positive images printed directly onto glass. They are backed with dark fabric or paper. They have a ghostly quality as they can only be viewed head on, when held at an angle, you only see the "ghost" of the image.
- Glass, gutta percha, velvet, gilt tin.
