July 30, 2014 Dubai

Just came back from traveling to Dubai…a cross between Las Vegas and Abu Dhabi. It is a city that has been completely erected in 15 years. Apparently there was practically nothing before but a few stores, a fort, limited air conditioning and sand…a lot of it. Now it boasts the tallest building and mega luxury shopping meca—all of which were the vision of Sheik Rashid bin Saeed Al Maktoum. It seems like what he envisioned became reality…tons of British, Russian and Arabs coming to freely shop in all of the massive malls and swim in the Ocean water which hits 35 degrees C. One of the expats told me where to go in the “old city” (15 years old) to enjoy authentic Dubai and sail on the river in a boat taxi that connects the city. It was the most interesting part of the trip and I can’t wait to go back.

July 21, 2014 Alexis Bittar for Sephora

I’ve done many collaborations in my days but rarely do I get the chance to work with Cosmetics.

Sephora approached me to design a capsule collection of brushes. I was intrigued because it’s been 15 years since I had designed any home products or furniture, and this seemed the closest to that category.

As we were in our second design meeting with the Sephora team, I got the idea of fusing Studio 54, New Wave and liquid gold. I wanted to do more than brushes and came up with a compact mirror with a black tassel…because it’s an essential when dancing the late nights. That’s coming from a gay man…so you ladies can decide.

There is a stand that I designed to hold the brushes, both aesthetically and has a meaningful purpose. The stand holds each brush so that it spotlights the brushes as sculpture. It also helps that they keep separate and don’t bang around.

Here is a sneak peek at the collection which will debut in all of Sephora’s stores in October. Trust me, this will sell out quickly because it is truly a very limited amount.
