When I was 14, I remember hearing the Lou Reed track Walk on the Wild Side. I was young, but I knew exactly what the song was referring to…except the tranny bit. It perfectly captured the feeling of the Bowery in the late ’70s and early ’80s. It had a seductive, melancholy lure that beckoned you into the underworld of NYC nightclubs.
Lou Reed was a New York staple. I would see him still riding on the subways, ingrained in the city culture…….. he will be missed.
